The Ex-Students’ Association of the University of Texas (Texas Exes) may be able to save the Cactus Cafe by providing a new home for the iconic live music venue in their building expansion planned for 2011.
From their statement:
The storied Cactus Cafe could be finding a new home on the University of Texas campus -- the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center.
Texas Exes CEO and executive director Jim Boon spoke with UT president Bill Powers Tuesday about the idea of incorporating the Cactus Cafe into a planned building expansion set for 2011.
"We understand the financial pressure the University is under and recognize that it needs to be focused on delivering services to students," Boon said. "As keepers of the history and traditions of the University, we are always sensitive to experiences that touch students' lives and create memories for alumni."
The statement by the Exes said that if the move went smoothly and no legal hurdles slowed down the process, performances could resume as early as fall 2001.
If this works out, it could possibly be the solution that the whole Save Cactus movement has been looking for since UT announced their intentions to close the Cactus late last week. Don't sit back and relax quite yet though. Let's keep up the pressure on President Powers and the University to be sure they can help accommodate this solution or any other possibility that develops so we can ensure that the Cactus lives on!
